Natural Remedies For Cough And Cold In Dogs

When your furry friend is feeling under the weather, it can be distressing for both of you. Coughs and colds in dogs are not uncommon, and while veterinary care is essential for severe cases, many natural remedies can help alleviate mild symptoms. Here’s how to support your canine companion through their recovery.

1. Steam Therapy

Just like humans, dogs can benefit from steam to relieve respiratory discomfort. Create a steamy environment by running a hot shower with the bathroom door closed. Now keep your dog there for 10-15 minutes. The warm, moist air helps soothe irritated airways and loosens mucus, making breathing easier. Alternatively, consider using a humidifier near their favorite resting spot to maintain moisture in the air.

2. Honey’s Healing Power

Honey is a natural remedy renowned for its soothing properties. It can coat the throat and reduce coughing irritation. For best results, use manuka honey, which has additional antibacterial benefits. Depending on your dog’s size, offer them half a teaspoon to one tablespoon of honey up to three times daily. Remember that honey should not be given to puppies under one year old.

3. Nourishing Broths

A warm bowl of low-sodium chicken or beef broth can work wonders for a sick dog. Not only does it provide hydration, but it also enhances the aroma of their food, encouraging them to eat even when they have a stuffy nose. Ensure that any broth you use is free from harmful ingredients like onions or excessive salt.

4. Rest and Comfort

Rest is crucial for recovery, so create a cozy space where your dog can relax without disturbances. Consider using pet-safe heating pads or warm blankets to keep them comfortable. Limiting their activity will allow their body to focus on healing.

While a cough or cold may seem minor, it’s essential to monitor your dog’s condition closely. If symptoms persist or worsen, seeking veterinary advice is crucial.
