Trump Offers Federal Workers A Chance To Resign If They Don’t Want To Return To The Office

President Donald Trump is offering to pay out civil servants who don't wish to remain part of his administration.

The Office of Personnel Management told federal workers in an email sent Tuesday that they would receive pay and benefits until later this year as long as they part ways with the government by Thursday next week.

The president's "deferred resignation" program is his latest push to reshape the federal workforce that has been roiled by his return-to-office mandate, hiring freeze and closing of diversity offices.

Under the subject line "Fork in the Road," the email asks employees to reply from their government account, typing the word "Resign" into the body.

"If you choose not to continue in your current role in the federal workforce, we thank you for your service to your country and you will be provided with a dignified, fair departure from the federal government utilizing a deferred resignation program," the email said.

Trump's "reformed" federal workforce is focused on "four pillars," which include a return to the office, a performance culture, a streamlined workforce and "enhanced" standards, according to the email.

Federal employees choosing to stay with their agency, however, do not guarantee their job into the future.

"At this time, we cannot give you full assurance regarding the certainty of your position or agency but should your position be eliminated you will be treated with dignity and will be afforded the protections in place for such positions," the email said.

The resignation program, starting Tuesday, is available to all federal employees until Feb. 6. Resigning via the program means one retains all pay and benefits and is exempt from "in-person work requirements" until Sept. 30.
