Trump Says He Had ‘very Good Telephone Call’ With Zelenskyy

President Donald Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday morning, describing the hourlong conversation as “very good” in a social media post and claiming that peace talks are “very much on track.”

The call came a day after Trump’s lengthy conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who agreed to a 30-day pause to attacks on energy infrastructure but not the broader ceasefire that Ukraine and the U.S. had agreed to a week earlier.

Trump said “much of the discussion” was based on that call with Putin “in order to align both Russia and Ukraine in terms of their requests and needs.”

Russia’s agreement to the brief halting of attacks on energy infrastructure was accompanied by an intensified aerial assault on several Ukrainian cities Tuesday evening, underscoring just how far off an end to the broader conflict remains.

Ukraine also had a positive initial reaction to the call.

"This call was indeed not bad. Trump shared some things from his conversation with Putin, discussed further steps, the work of the teams, and needed to meet again and talk about how everything would work out," said a senior Ukrainian official who was granted anonymity to discuss the sensitive call.

"I would not speak about any reactions, would just say that the whole tone of the conversation was that we have to move on," the official added.
