Trump Vows To Cut Off Aid To South Africa

President Donald Trump wrote Sunday that he was "cutting off all future funding to South Africa" in protest of its current land reform.

"South Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY," the president wrote on TruthSocial, adding: "A massive Human Rights VIOLATION, at a minimum, is happening for all to see."

He presumably was referring to an expropriation measure recently signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa designed to bring land reform "in the public interest," redressing economic and racial inequality dating back to the nation's apartheid era. "This momentous achievement reinforces the ANC’s dedication to addressing the persistent legacy of colonial dispossession and apartheid spatial planning, ensuring that the land and resources of South Africa are used to benefit the majority of its people," the ruling African National Congress said after it was enacted.

Critics have branded the law as unfair, particularly since it permits land seizure without compensation under certain circumstances.

Trump added: "The United States won’t stand for it, we will act. Also, I will be cutting off all future funding to South Africa until a full investigation of this situation has been completed!"

Elon Musk, Trump's close ally and one of the faces of his new administration, was born in South Africa in 1971, during the country's apartheid era. He became an American citizen in 2002.

Ramaphosa, speaking recently at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, said he expected to get along well with Trump. "I spoke to him soon after he was elected, congratulated him, and we both said we are looking forward to continued dealings and engagements," he said, according to Reuters.
