United Airlines Plane Wing Seen On Fire Before Passengers Evacuated In Houston: Watch
Video shared on social media shows the wing of a United Airlines aircraft on fire Sunday morning before more than 100 passengers were evacuated ahead of a planned flight from Houston.
The apparent engine issue forced officials to halt the takeoff while United Airlines Flight 1382 was still on the runway at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. All 104 passengers and five crew members safely exited the airplane, which was preparing to fly to LaGuardia Airport in New York City.
No injuries were reported, and all passengers were rebooked for an afternoon flight, United Airlines previously told USA TODAY.
The FAA is investigating the engine issue, the latest troubling incident involving aircraft since a military Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines passenger jet collided in midair last week in Washington, D.C.
A passenger aboard the United Airlines flight recorded video of the fiery engine around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, as well as first responders rushing along nearby runways to get to the aircraft.
Those aboard the commercial jet were evacuated on the runway with slides and stairs.
The Houston Fire Department, which was among the agencies to respond to the scene, later said the fire shown in videos on social media was already extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.
"HFD did not put out a fire on this incident," the fire department said on social media. "Yes, we are aware of the video. When our units arrived, there was no fire to put out."
The engine mishap follows on the heels of two major fatal aviation crashes last week in the United States.
Last Wednesday, 67 people were killed over the Potomac River in DC when an American Airlines passenger jet and Black Hawk helicopter crashed in midair. The collision occurred as the airplane from Wichita, Kansas was attempting to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport.
Two days later, a Medevac jet crashed Friday into a busy neighborhood in Philadelphia, killing seven people and injuring over 20 others.
